Sanctuary - is part of the area or water area of natural complex which is protected by special law. Sanctuaries are different from preserves, because in reserves the whole natural complex is protected, but in sanctuary only some components (plants, birds, animals) of natural complex are under protection.
Shaky state sanctuary
The area of Shaky state sanctuary is 10.4 thousand hectares. The purpose of this sanctuary is to protect the animals (species of pig and bear) and birds like pheasant and partridge living in this area.
Lachin state sanctuary
The area of Lachin state sanctuary is 21.3 thousand hectares. The purpose of this sanctuary is to protect and allow the reproduction of the animals (roe deer, species of goat and pig etc.) and birds (partridge, willow grouse etc.) living in this area.
Dashalti state sanctuary
Dashalti state sanctuary was established mainly for the protection of "Topkhana" forests and covers an area of 0.4 thousand hectares. The territory of the sanctuary is situated in the basin of the Gar-Garchay River and has very rich biodiversity of rare plants.
Arazboyu state sanctuary
Arazboyu state sanctuary was established in the territory of Zangilan region and covers an area of 2.2 thousand hectares along the Iranian border. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect and regenerate the rare "Tugay" Forests in the Arazboyu part of the Zangilan Region.
Gubadli state sanctuary
Gubadli state sanctuary was established in the area, which covers 20 thousand hectares. The purpose of this sanctuary is to protect and allow reproduction of the animal kingdom, especially roe dee, pheasant etc. living in this area.
Gabala state sanctuary
Gabala state sanctuary covers an area of 39.6 thousand hectares. The purpose of this sanctuary is maintain the rare forest landscape and animal kingdom in the territory of the Gabala region.
Garayazi - Agstafa state sanctuary
Garayazi - Agstafa state sanctuary was established in the territory of Agstafa region and covers the area of 17.9 thousand hectares in the Garayazi forest. The purpose of this sanctuary is to protect and regenerate the "Tugay" forests near Kura River, and also protect and allow reproduction of rare animal and bird species living in this area.
Shamkir state sanctuary
Shamkir state sanctuary was established along the both sides of Kura River and covers an area of 10 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect valuable animal and bird species living in this area.
Gizlica state sanctuary
Gizlica state sanctuary was established in the territory of Gizlica forests in the Gadabay region and covers and area of 5.1 thousand hectares. The purpose of this sanctuary is to protect the endangered species of animal and plant kingdom living in this area.
Ismayilli state sanctuary
Ismayilli state sanctuary covers an area of 34.4 thousand hectares. The purpose of this sanctuary is to protect and allow reproduction of animal and bird species living in this area. The territory of the sanctuary is covered by alpine and sub-alpine highland-meadow and forest plants.
Ordubad state sanctuary
Ordubad state sanctuary covers an area of 40 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect and allow reproduction of rare and valuable animal and bird species living in this area.
Gusar state sanctuary
Gusar state sanctuary covers an area of 15 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect a number of animal and bird (pheasant, partridge etc) species (that are very important for hunting) living in this area.
Absheron state sanctuary
Absheron state sanctuary was established in the coastal part of Baku city and covers an area of 0.8 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect the gazelle, Caspian seal and sea birds.
Zuvand state sanctuary
Zuvand state sanctuary was established in the north-east slope of the Talish Mountains and covers an area of 15 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect the species of animals and birds like wolves, foxes, rabbits, partridge etc.
Korchay state sanctuary
Korchay state sanctuary was established in the territory Khanlar and Goranboy region and covers an area of 15 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is protect animals and bird species (that are very important for hunting) living in this area.
Aggol state sanctuary
Aggol state sanctuary was established in the territory Agjabadi and Baylagan regions and covers an area of 9.1 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect migrating and local birds and animals in the water, wetlands and land territories.
Barda state sanctuary
Barda state sanctuary covers an area of 7.5 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect "Tugay" forests around the Kura River and enrich the fauna of these territories.
Bandovan state sanctuary
Bandovan state sanctuary was established in the territory of Salyan and Garadagh regions and covers an area of 22 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect and allow reproduction of gazelle and other animals, and also migrating, local seabirds and land birds.
Gil adasi state sanctuary
Gil adasi state sanctuary was established near the Absheron peninsula in the Caspian Sea and covers an area of 0.4 thousand hectares. The purpose of the sanctuary is to protect the birds (especially important species of sea-gull) inside and around the island.
Kichik Glzllagaj state sanctuary
Kichik Glzllagaj state sanctuary was established near Kichik Glzllagaj bay in the Lankaran-Astara zone and covers an area of 10.7 thousand hectares. The purpose of sanctuary is to protect the migrating and local birds in the water, wetlands and land territories.

Ordubad National Park
Ordubad National Park covers 12131,0 hectares of the territory of the Ordubad Region. National Park is named after Hasan Aliyev. The purpose of Ordubad National Park is to protect separate components in the area, to save specific climate, relief and other physical geographic characters of this area, to save various kinds of animals as well as endemic species and specific species of fauna in this territory, to carry out the ecological monitoring, to educate people ecological awareness, to create suitable conditions for tourism.
Shirvan National Park
Shirvan National Park was established in the 54373,5 hectares of administrative areas of Garadag, Salyan v? Neftchala regions and Baku city. The main purpose of National Park is to save main components of semi-desert landscape, gazelles listed in "Red Book" of Azerbaijan Republic and species of fauna specific to that area, to carry out ecological monitoring, to educate people ecological awareness, to create suitable conditions for tourism and recreation.
Ag-gol National Park
Ag-gol is the most famous typical desert-lake ecosystem. It is situated in the administrative areas of Agcabadi and Beylaqan regions. National Park is one of the places where migrating and local birds are accommodated in the plain regions of Azerbaijan. The territory of Ag-gol National Park is 17924 hectares. The main purpose of Ag-gol National Park is to save important wetland areas, semi-desert landscape specific to this area, to protect endangered fauna species accommodated inside and around the lake, as well as, to provide monitoring of environment, improvement of education and ecotourism.
Hirkan National Park
Hirkan National Park was established on 9 February, 2004. National Park covers is located in the south-eastern part of Azerbaijan, within the territory of Lankaran and Astara administrative regions. The area of the national park is 21435 hectares. The purpose of the National Park is to protect the nature in this area as a complex, to save the typical flora and fauna species listed in the Azerbaijan "Red Book", to implement the environmental monitoring, to inform the public, and also create suitable conditions for researches, tourism and recreation.
Altiagac National Park
Altiagac National Park was established according to the decree dated 31 August, 2004. National Park is situated in the territory of Khizi and Siyazan regions. The area of Altiagac National Reserve and surrounding forests is 11035 hectares. The purpose of the National Park is to protect the main components of the natural landscape of the south-eastern slopes of Great Caucasus, to regenerate the flora and fauna species, to implement the environmental monitoring and improve the tourism, to create conditions for recreation and to inform the public about this.
Absheron National Park
Absheron National Park was established according to the decree dated 8 February, 2005 in the base of Absheron State Sanctuary within the territory of the Azizbayov administrative region and the area of the park is 783 hectares. The purpose of the Absheron State Sanctuary was to protect the rare fauna species like gazelle, which came to this area on July, 1969, and also Caspian seal and sea-wetland birds.

Shahbuz State Natural Reserve
Shahbuz State Natural Reserve was opened on 10 September, 2004. The main territories of Shahbuz State Natural Reserve cover highland areas, which are located at 2200-2400m height, and the Batabat Lake, which gets more precipitation and the Bichanak pass.
Eldar Shamı State Natural Reserve
Eldar Shamı State Natural Reserve was established according to the Decree dated 16 December, 2004 within the territory of the administrative territory of Samukh region and covers 1686 hectares. The 300 hectares of these Eldar Shami forests were transferred to Turyanchay state reserve as a branch in order to protect the area. In 1965 it is operating as a branch of Goy-Gol State Natural Reserve.
Altiagaj State Natural Reserve
Altiagaj State Natural Reserve was established in 1990. The area of the reserve is 4.4 thousand hectares. The purpose of the Altiagaj State Natural Reserve is to prevent the erosion in the south-eastern slopes of the Great Caucasus Mountains, allow reproduction and regeneration of rare and valuable species of plant and animal kingdom in the Altiagaj Khizi desert.
