Economic Regions of the Azerbaijan Republic.
 Aran (Lowland) Economic Region
Lowland Economic Region covers Agjabady, Agdash, Beylagan, Barda, Bilasuvar, Goychay, Hajigabul, Imishly, Kurdamir, Neftchala, Saatly, Sabirabad, Salyan, Ujar, Zardab administrative regions and cities of Ali-Bayramly, Mingachevir, Yevlakh.
Lowland Economic Region has a favorable economical-geographical location. The area of the Economic Region is 21.43 thousand km2 (24.7% of the territory of the Azerbaijan). More than half of the territory of the Lowland Economic Region consists of plans that are below the sea level. Only the area near the adjacent mountains is relatively slope. The climate common for this region is dry subtropical.
Favorable natural conditions and economical-geographical location of the economic region had an impact on the distribution of population. The population of the region is 1667.1 thousand (20.5 % of the population of the country).

The main mineral resources of the economic region consists of oil, natural gas, iodine-bromine mine waters, different construction materials (sawn stone, sand, gravel). These resources are mainly concentrated in the central and south-eastern part of the region. Main natural resources are solar power, resources of Kura and Araz rives, large fertile soil resources. Lowland Economic Region has both ground and underground fuel-energy resources.
Industry is relatively more developed in Lowland Economic Region. The industry of the region is concentrated in the south-western (Ali-Bayramly, Salyan, Neftchala) and north-western (Mingachevir and Yevlakh). Electroenergetics is one of the most developed and specialized sectors of the region. Two power stations in Mingachevir produce approximately 60% of power used within the country.

Chemistry, engineering industry, light, food industries and construction materials form the main part of the industry of the economic region. Chemistry industry is concentrated in Mingachevir, Salyan, Neftchala including plastic bulk production plant in Salyan, iodine-bromine plant in Neftchala. Mingachevir, Ali-Bayramly and Salyan are main centers of engineering industry. In each administrative region center there are enterprises of food industry. The significant part of production belongs to cotton-cleaning plants that do the initial processing of the cotton. Also, cotton cloth weaving (Mingachevir), initial processing of wool (Yevlakh), artificial skin production (Ali-Bayramly), carpet weaving (Gazy Mammad) are the important sectors of light industry. The food industry of the region is based on processing of fruit and vegetables (Sabirabad), vine, cognac (Goichay), fish cans (Banka), meat-dairy products and cattle-breeding and grain products.

Along with developed industry Lowland Economic Region is important agricultural region. The agriculture of the region is based on watered husbandry Channels from large reservoirs “Upper Shirvan” and “Upper Garabagh” were built for watering the crop areas. The collector-drainage network constructed here enables cleaning the saline land and removal of saline waters from the area. Cotton-growing, grain-growing, vine-growing, dry subtropical fruit-growing, water-melon, pool fishing are specialized agricultural sector. This region produces more than 90% of the cotton produced in Azerbaijan. Also potato, sugar beet are grown in the economic region.
Transportation routes (railroads and motorways) with national importance cross lowland Economic Region. Transportation routes connecting Baku with main economic region of the country, Georgia, Iran and Turkey cross the territory of this region. In recent days, the importance of these routes increased as the international cargo transportation got intensified. Yevlakh-Baku airway is available.
