Guba-Khachmaz Economic Region covers Davachy, Khachmaz, Guba, Gusar, Siyazan administrative regions and is located in the north-eastern part of Azerbaijan. The area of the Economic Region is 7.66 thousand km2 (8.8% of the territory of the Azerbaijan). Economic Region has specific landscape characteristics. The territory of the region can be divided into 4 zones with different altitudes (from 26 m below the sea level to 4466 m abave the sea level) – plains, foothills, middle and high mountains. The climate of the region is different in each zone. In plain zone the climate is hot, in mountain zone the climate is cold-humid and cold.
The population of the region is 453.1 thousand (5.6% of the population of the region). Because of the landscape-climate conditions population is mainly concentrated in the coast with Caspian Sea. Main natural resources of the Guba-Khachmaz Economic Regions are oil, natural gas, sand, gravel and clay. The economic region has dense river network and rich water resources. The 10-11% of the territory of the economic region is covered by forest. This region highly significant as health resort zone and has rich natural recreation potential. There is a Galaalty mineral water health resort in Davachy.
The main part of the economy of the region is agriculture. Vegetable and fruit-growing is wide spread. Vine-growing is wide spread in the Davachy, Siyazan, Khachmaz regions and potato-growing is common for Gusar. Grain-growing is also very common for this region. Cattle-breeding is developed in plain areas of the region, but sheep-breeding is common for foothills and mountain areas. There are poultry facilities operating in Siyazan, Charkhi and Davachy.
The development of agriculture stimulated the development of processing industry, especially light and food industries. The main sectors of the agrarian-industrial complex of the Region are fruit-vegetable canning (Khachmaz, Khudat, Guba), fishery processing (Khudat) and carpet weaving (Guba, Khachmaz, Gusar, Gonagkend, Pirabadil). Grain and dairy products are processed in Khachmaz and Davachy. Heavy industry of the economic region include oil and gas production (Siyazan), electrical engineering plant (Guba), processing of debris (Khachmaz). There are brick factory and bulk enterprises in Guba, Siyazan and Khachmaz.
Guba-Khachmaz economic region has a good transportation-geographical location. Railways, motorways, oil, gas and water pipelines, telecommunication lines have a significant impact on development of transportation-economical relations of the country. Communication lines connecting the Azerbaijan with Russian Federation cross territory of this region.
The infrastructure of the region has a big impact on socio-economic development and satisfaction of the socio-cultural demands (health, scientific-cultural, education) of the population of this region. There is public library, theatre, hospital and other social infrastructure facilities operating in the region.
